Use methylated spirits (denatured ethanol or ethyl alcohol) as an all purpose cleaner, disinfectant and as fuel for spirit stoves, lamps and alcohol heaters.

Methylated spirits is a raw alcohol and menthol. The menthol gives it a strong smell and taste, so it isn’t mistaken for water. It’s a solvent for paints, so it removes ink, texta, felt pen marks etc and is also a great all purpose cleaner. Mixing it 50/50 with water and spraying the solution on windows to clean the panes is also a great idea. Wipe the solution off again using paper towels – rubbing vertically for outside panes (following the rain line) and horizontally for interior panes. Don’t use newspaper…it used to work when it contained lampblack (which was a great glass polish) but it doesn’t contain it anymore, it now contains latex and will leave smear marks. Metho is also great for cleaning white boards, even if you’ve used a permanent marker on the board. 

 

Finally, metho is a great fuel for heating as it converts almost completely to heat with very little residue or smell.  Compare a metho heater to an electric fan heater, and it's immediately clear that the fan heater is comparatively very inefficient.
