I'm glad you asked! Environmentally responsible oxo-bio plastic can be re-used and recycled, but will degrade and disappear in a short timescale, leaving no fragments, no methane, and no harmful residues.

 

The degradation process is initiated at the time the polyethylene or polypropylene is extruded by the inclusion of a small amount of a special additive called TDPA (Totally Degradable Plastic Additive). This additive works to break down the carbon-carbon bonds in the plastic leading to a lowering of the molecular weight and eventually to a loss of strength and other properties. Stabilisers work to ensure that a sufficiently long useful life is provided for the bag.

 

EPI degradable bags do not need a biologically active environment to start degrading - this will happen even if the plastic is left in the open air. This is very important if we are to address the serious litter problems caused by waste plastic. For this reason in particular, EPI totally degradable plastic is superior to 'bio-degradable' which requires the plastic to be in a biologically active environment (for example, by being buried in the ground) before the degradation process is initiated.

Biodegradable products break down through the action of a naturally ocurring micro organism such as bacteria, fungi etc over a period of time. These products are usually made from plant or animal sources. Examples of biodegradable include paper, vegetable scraps and some forms of plastics made from ingredients such as corn starch.

 

There are several disadvantages to biodegradable waste. When dumped in landfills, it's often dug deep into the fill, where the "good" bacteria can't survive in the oxygen depleted environment. It then breaks down under anaerobic conditions which creates methane, a greenhouse gas with over 62 times the GWP (Global Warming Potential) of carbon dioxide. Also, biodegradable waste can contain toxins.

 

Degradable plastics are oil based and break down through chemical reactions rather than the activity of micro organisms, so they can degrade in an anaerobic environment into water, CO2, biomass and trace elements.
