What is Bioplastic?
Bioplastics are plastics derived from renewable sources, such as plant starch. Some, but not all, bioplastics are designed to biodegrade. The production and use of bioplastics is generally regarded as a more sustainable activity when compared with plastic production from petroleum, because it relies less on fossil fuel as a carbon source and also introduces fewer, net-new greenhouse emissions if it biodegrades. They significantly reduce hazardous waste caused by oil-derived plastics, which remain solid for hundreds of years.
BioPak Clear PLA containers provide the following attributes
- Stiffness
- Transparency
- Flavour and odour barrier
- Anti-fogging characteristics
- Grease and oil resistance
The inherent stiffness of NatureWorks polymer also allows containers to be downguaged compared to polystyrene containers
Note: Bioplastic bowls are banned in WA and ACT when used without a lid. Clear lids are also banned in WA from 1 September, but can be used for pre-packed food displayed for sale. Different Australian states have varying single-use plastic bans.
